Critical Appreciation of the poem-TRUE LOVE written by William Shakespeare

William Shakespeare

-was born in April 1564 in Warwickshire.

-His father was John Shakespeare

Shakespeare wrote 154 sonnets. Out of which, the first 126 sonnets are addressed to a young man- Mr. W.H.who is believed to possess great physical charm. The rest 28 sonnets are addressed to 'dark lady' whose identity remains unknown till date.

True love is Shakespeare's 116th sonnet. It is addressed to Mr W.H.

The theme of the poem is love.

             SUMMARY

According to shakespeare,

-love that changes when circumstances change is not love. It is mere sensuality and lust.

-Once two minds get united in love; nothing can change or separate them.

-No remover can remove or can bend true love.

-In other words, no external force or influence however strong can break the bond between two minds united in love.

-True love is not time's fool as hings and beings grow and decay with time.

-With the passage of time, he rosy lips and cheeks of youth lose their charm and lustre. With the physique withering, lust dissolves. It does not happen so with true love which is the marriage of true minds.

-Also Shakespeare speaks with conviction that no one can disprove his views on true love.

       POINTS TO PONDER

-In the third quatrain(a stanza of four lines), Shakespeare speaks about the time transcending aspect of true love.

-In this poem,time is personified.

-According to Shakespeare,'True Love' bears it out even to the edge of doom. Doom's day or the day of judgement is a biblical belief.

-Shakespeare's sonnet no. 116 is a superb example of the poet's artistic craftsmanship; his mastery over language, his ability of creating pictures with words.

-Rhyme scheme- ababcdcdefefgg

- consists of three quatrains and a couplet.

-There is use of iambic pentameter.

SINCE THERE'S NO HELP- Michael Drayton

SINCE THERE'S NO HELP

                         -MICHAEL DRAYTON

                    SUMMARY

Michael Drayton was a contemporary of William Shakespeare. He was a Warwickshire lad.

Let's shake hands and forget everything we once promised each other.

I am glad with all of my heart that I am out of this relationship.

Let's shake hands and forget everything we once promised each other,

Even if we meet in future let us agree not to show any sign that we still love one another.

Now as we realise that our love dies for each other forever and that we cannot entertain any further, we should hope that we can make this separation work.

If you wanted to, you could reawaken my dying love for you and bring it back to life.

POINTS TO RECOLLECT

*This is a break-up poem.

*consists three quatrains and a couplet

*This sonnet is in iambicpentameter

*In lines 9 to 12, there is personification of love.

DISCOVERY OF DIGESTION

DISCOVERY OF DIGESTION

Till the beginning of 1800, the process of digestion in the human body was enveloped in great enigma.

However, during the nineteenth century, four men contributed in solving the puzzle of digestion. Let us read about each one of them in detail.

Discovery by William Beaumont

The very first discovery was carried out by William Beaumont who was an assistant surgeon in the U.S. army.

Beaumont was the first to study about human digestion.

On 6th June, 1822, he was called to a fur company store in Mackinac Island to medicate a Canadian trapper named, Alexis St. Martin. He was shot  in the stomach during the war. It generated a wound of about the size of a human's hand in the abdominal area. Even after continuous treatment, it left a hole in the gastric area which is known as gastric fistula.

Beaumont thought that the man would die. But, he recovered phenomenally inspite of having the  fistula. The hole was so profoundly open that it could be looked into his stomach with ease.

Although Beaumont had access to a living human stomach, he had no interest in the study of digestion.
But, he was a keen observer.

On August 1 , 1825, he initiated controlled experimentation by suspending foods like beef, pork and cabbage in the stomach on strings.

He observed the stages at regular intervals and carefully recorded them. He also took samples of the gastric secretions and sent it to various chemists for analysis.

Over the years, Beaumont made several experiments on St. Martin. It was in 1838 that he published his book: Experiments and Observations on the Gastric Juice, and The Physiology of Digestion.By this time, St. Martin was stupefied playing the role of a guinea pig. So they parted ways.

William Beaumont died on 25 April, 1853 as a result of slipping on ice- covered steps.

Due to his earliest contribution to the discovery of digestion , he is known as the 'Father of Gastric Physiology.'

Digestion by William Prout

William Prout was an english chemist and physician.

In 1823, Prout discovered that stomach juices contain hydrochloric acid which can be separated from gastric juice by distillation.

In 1827, he proposed the classification of substances in food into sugars, starches, oily bodies and albumen which were later known as carbohydrates, fats and proteins.

Discovery by Theodor Schwann

Theodor Schwann was a german biologist who is known as the framer of the cell theory.

In 1836, while investigating digestive processes he isolated  a substance responsible for digestion in the stomach and named it pepsin. Later on, it was found that pepsin is responsible for breaking down proteins into amino acids.

Discovery by Claude Bernard

Claude Bernard was a french physiologist who is recognised for his discoveries regarding the role of pancreas in digestion.

In 1848, Bernard discovered that the pancreatic secretion could emulsify and saponify fatty substances. This was done due to an enzyme which was later known as pancreatic lipase.

This article is made to throw light to the major biologists who commenced discoveries to the process of digestion.

ALBERT EINSTEIN

ALBERT EINSTEIN

Albert Einstein was a german-born physicist who proposed the theory of relativity which forms the basis of modern physics.

INITIAL DAYS

Einstein was born on March 14, 1879 in Ulm, Germany. His father Hermann Einstein ran an electrochemical factory whereas his mother Pauline Einstein ran the household. Einstein also has a sister named Maza Einstein who was two years younger than him.

EDUCATION

At the age of 7, Einstein entered a catholic elementary school.Although his academic life wasn't that happening. He felt extremely miserable to occupy himself with the things he was not interested. He had firm belief in education but did not considered memorising facts and dates merely for the sake of examination.

He was not liked by his teachers because he raised valid questions when no one else did. Consequently, he was asked to leave school as his behavior was felt to be a disturbance in the environment of studying.

After this, Einstein tried to enter the Federal Institute of Technology (FIT) in Zurich , Switzerland. But, his education in subjects other than mathematics wasn't up to the par. As a result, he failed in the entrance examination.

He obtained his diploma from the Cantonal School in Aarau, Switzerland and then he was automatically admitted into FIT in the year 1896. It was at this point he realised that he was better suited for physics than mathematics. Einstein graduated from FIT in1900.

In 1902, he was hired as an Inspector in the Patent office in Bern, Switzerland.

PERSONAL LIFE

FIRST MARRIAGE

Einstein married Mileva Maric`, a physicist and mathematician on 6 January, 1903. She also happened to be Einstein's classmate.

They had three children; two sons, namely-Hans and Eduard and a daughter named Liesrel.

Liesrel was their first child born in 1902 but her fate remains unknown till date. Rumours aroused that she died of an scarlett fever or the couple gave up the child for adoption.

Hans Albert Einstein was Einstein's first son born in 1904. Their third child Eduard Einstein was born in 1910.

Einstein separated from Mileva in 1914 and the couple got divorced in 1919.

SECOND MARRIAGE

Einstein got married again to his cousin Elsa Einstein in 1919. Albert and Elsa did not had a child of their own. However, Einstein had two stepdaughters namely- Iise and Margot from Elsa's previous marriage . Later on, Elsa died of a painful illness in December 20, 1936 at New Jersey, United States.

EINSTEIN's THEORY OF RELATIVITY

Einstein's biggest contribution to the modern physics was his Theory of Relativity put forward in1905.

Einstein's theory of relativity revolves around two theories: Special relativity and General relativity.

The theory of special relativity states that the speed of light in vacuum was independent of the motion of the observers. It proposed new concepts of space and time.

His theory of general relativity, (which was put forward in 1915) determined that massive objects cause a distortion in space and time which is felt as gravity.

MOVED TO U.S.

In December 1932,Einstein made the decision to move to US, where he took a position at the Institute for Advanced Study in New Jersey.

By the end of 1936 (when his wife Elsa died) he was busy with his efforts to find a unified field theory which would incorporate all the laws of physics into a singular frame.

In the late 1930's , Einstein's theories including his equation of mass- energy equivalence helped him to form the basis in the formation of the atom bomb.

In 1952, Einstein rejected the proposal to become the President of Israel put forth by David Ben-Gurion, Israel's premier.

LAST YEARS OF LIFE

Throughout the last years of life, Einstein continued his quest for finding a unified field theory which remained unfinished till his death on 18 April, 1955 at New Jersey, US.

DEATH

Einstein died due to an Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm(AAA) at Penn Medicine Princeton Medical Center in New Jeresy, US.

Even though he could be cured, he refused further medication and said,"I want to go when I want. It is tasteless to prolong life artificially; I have done my share, it is time to go. I will do it elegantly."

AFTERLIFE OF HIS BRAIN

Einstein's cremation took place on the latter part of the day of his death. But, soon his son Hans Albert discovered that his father's body in the coffin did not lay intact.

The pathologist Thomas Harvey who conducted the autopsy of Einstein's body , removed his brain and kept it in the hope of unlocking the secret to his genius.

After approval from Einstein's son , Harvey had the brain cut into multiple pieces and sent to various scientists all over the world for research.

The first conclusion from the study of his brain claimed that it had an abnormal proportion of two types of cells namely, Neurons and Glia.

Hippocampus which is a subcortical brain structure that plays the main role in memory and learning. The neurons on the left side of Einstein's hippocampus were found to be larger than those on the right. This implies that the neurons in the left hemisphere of Einstein's brain may have had stronger nerve cell connections.

A study published in a journal in Sep 2013 formulated that Einstein's Corpus Callosum (which is a large bundle of fibers that connects the two hemispheres of the brain )was somewhat more thicker than normal. This is supposed to provide more extensive connections between the hemispheres.

The most famous of them all came in 1999 from The Canadian University which claimed that Einstein's brain possessed unusual folds in his parietal lobe i.e. a part of the brain associated with mathematics and spatial ability.

Einstein's ability to think so widely about  the fundamental properties of the universe is the reasonfor him to be considered as the father of modern physics.
